Hormone Replacement Therapy In Charleston

Hormone Replacement by Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for Charleston Area Residents

What is Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy or BHRT uses chemically identical hormones found in your body to supplement what your body is producing at the time.  A compounding pharmacy will work with your doctor to specially formulate a mix of hormones to supplement your body’s naturally occurring hormones.

What does Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy treat?Charleston Hormone Replacement Therapy for Hot Flashes

BHRT treats many symptoms for menopause, postmenopause, and perimenopause.  This includes hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.  Women can also experience insomnia, moodiness, low energy, and reduced sexual drive.

How does my Doctor and Pharmacy Work Together?

Your local Charleston area Doctor will monitor hormone levels through saliva or blood tests.  As your levels change your doctor will adjust the prescribed level of hormones with each new prescription.  Your pharmacist will adjust your custom compounded prescription each time your doctor recommends a change.   Our pharmacists are trained in hormone replacement therapy and will be able to work with you and your doctor on recommended dose changes and symptom management.  Since we are a local Charleston pharmacy, we will be able to make adjustments the same day your doctor recommends a change or you simply need a refill.

What kind of medication is compounded for Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement therapy?

Compounded Bioidentical hormones primarily include Estrogens (Estradiol and Estriol) and Progesterone.  These FDA approved drugs replace imbalances caused during menopause and helps alleviate many of its symptoms.  The final medication comes in many forms.  The most popular and easiest to use is a cream administered directly to the skin.  It can also be made into a lozenge or a suppository.

As a pharmacy right here in Charleston, we can make these medications within a day with a local pharmacist you can talk to in person.  Our staff has undergone extensive training and is here to work with you and your doctor to ensure you receive the best possible treatment for your needs.

Compounding Pharmacy For North Charleston, Goose Creek, and Summerville

Herold’s Pharmacy North Compounding Pharmacy is now open and Serving North Charleston, Hanahan, Goose Creek, and Summerville.

Our Compounding Lab is set up to make custom medication orders for many types of conditions and patient types.  For this blog post we will focus on compounding for dermatological conditions.

Compounding Pharmacy tools

Compounded medications can be a better alternatives to mass produced store bought creams and ointments.  Compounded skin medications are made specifically for your condition and skin type by your doctor.  There are many conditions that are treatable through compounding including Acne, Dermatitis, Eczema, Psoriasis, and Shingles. Medications can be compounded into the liquids, Drops, Ointments, Creams and Gels.  Whichever form is best suited for the condition being treated.

For Acne conditions your doctor may have prescribe similar creams available over the counter, but with higher concentrations of common active ingredients, like salicylic acid, than are available over the counter.  Your allergies may play a roll as well.  Other alternative active and inactive ingredients may be needed to avoid an allergic reaction. for your skin type and avoid any chemicals you may be allergic to.  The same is true for other skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, and rashes.

For Shingles, compounds can be very helpful in treating pain.  The pain from shingles can be very difficult to deal with.  Traditional pain medications aren’t ideal for reducing the pain associated with this condition.  Your doctor can write a prescription strength cream with multiple medications to relieve most of the dermatological related pain.
Other custom compound formulations available for your doctor to choose from. Please contact us with questions about a condition or medication requirement.
